I posted this idea before, it gets recs, and then I haven’t heard a peep in a long time.
Tonight’s diary on Harper’s index mentions how in the states that swung the election, many multiples of the margins did not have IDs.
So, why aren’t we getting people ID’s?
Yes, ideally we’d get rid of the corrupt voter ID laws. But we’re not getting those legislatures anytime soon.
It’d be great if we could do it in a really friendly way, like free IDs where they aren’t. Same issue.
It’s be nice if the courts ruled against the laws. Doesn’t seem likely.
But what can be done and Republicans would have a hard time blocking is a movement to get voters IDs. Say, ok you can have your voter ID laws, but the voters will get those IDs.
Seems like pretty straightforward activism.
1. Education and motivation to get the ID.
2. Activities — like rallies where forms are handed out.
3. Fundraising — not only try to subsidize the cost, entirely if possible, but why not pay people to get IDs? We can’t (and shouldn’t be able to) pay them to vote, but there’s no law against a reward for getting an ID.
Let’s take on this damn issue that is costing us elections repeatedly and take the weapon away from the Republicans.
They might be sitting in amazement in private wondering why they can keep getting away with it.
Has me wondering whether to go make a kickstarter and get this started.
