How to sell Medicare for All: Stop throwing away over a trillion dollars every year.

Politically, Americans — not only including but especially Republicans and Independents — are conditioned to the message of ‘cutting wasteful spending’.

However much they’re ideologically indoctrinated and blinded to other views — cutting wasteful spending is part of the ideology, so they are responsive to it.

Democrats like to focus on how improving healthcare would help people — good. But others are used to saying ‘no’ to ‘big government Nanny state’ programs from Democrats.

So, have another message as well:

We’re spending $3.2 trillion on healthcare and it’s twice as much or more than any comparable country, and we’re not getting a return for it.

It’s going to rich people, to system inefficiencies to protect a profitable system with dozens of duplicate insurance systems, to pay for sales and marketing and bonuses for the companies.

We could cut our spending over a trillion dollars AND cover everyone AND have as good or better results by going to single-payer and cutting the waste.

In my opinion, this is a winning message for persuading a whole lot of people who are resistant to the ‘make our healthcare system government run’ argument.

They’re for people having healthcare, if it didn’t violate their views on things like ‘big government’. So, cut a trillion dollars of waste AND get healthcare for everyone?

Only the people getting that trillion dollars of waste should complain.

And anyone can understand that.
